Media Log Number Thirty :) - Malibu Rum Commercial

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ca-HZ7qiR0I

I love this commercial. It is funny because people in Barbados are actually like that, Both of my parents are from Barbados and they are always complaining when anyone is late.  If anyone took life that seriously we would all be in trouble because that is just a little too much. Everyone has different times and i think this commercial is very effective because it promotes Malibu Rum very well.

Media Log Number Twenty Nine-Amp'd Mobile Ad

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8CgKjYolPc

This is an advertisement for Amp'd Mobile. In this video a women comes home and tries to please her husband by dancing on the stripper pole. I guess the stripper pole was not installed properly and when she jumped up and tried to spin down the pole it feel down and she broke the table. At the end of the video is says that this video was taking on Amp's mobile. I thought this was one of the funniest videos I have ever seen in my life. It must suck a lot to fall off a stripper pole but i have never laughed so hard in my life. I wouldn't of known it was Amp'd mobile if it wasn't for the slogan at the end.

Media Log Number Twenty Eight- Cosmopolitan Cover

I do not understand how this magazine cover got published. Her hand looks like a man and her head is too small. She also has to wide of a neck and a rubber hand. This photograph is extremely photoshopped and it does not look real at all.  I guess they thought it looked natural for someone to look like that. This is example of horrible photoshopping.

Media Log Number Twenty Seven- Tom Ford Ad

This is an ad for Tom Ford Men's Cologne. It was banned in the United States of America because it was sexually explicit. I have a feeling a lot of men would love to buy this cologne.  At first I thought it was women perfume but it makes more sense for it to be mens because it is so sexual. It makes a lot of sense that it got banned because I do not think a lot of people want to see this when the read there magazines.

Media Log Number Twenty Six-A Very Special Family Guy Freakin' Christmas

I love  Family Guy and I love Christmas. So why put them together.  This was one of the funniest episodes I have ever seen. Family Guys comedy is so hilarious. When ever I am in a bad mood I can watch Family Guy to make me feel better. Stewie and Brian are my favourite characters in the show. They are so sarcastic and funny. I love Christmas Specials for TV Shows. Even though it is a week early they showed it. It is an good way to get in the christmas spirit.

Media Log Number Twenty Five- Tim Burton's Holiday Creature

Tim Burton created this art piece for his exhibition in Toronto. It is located in the front window at the Bell Light Box. I like this art piece a lot because I have never seen anything like this before and it must of took a long time for him to make this piece. I like how it is eating Christmas.  I think it suits the time  because Christmas is in  a week and then exhibition ends on April 26th. I think a lot of people will have a new understanding for his work. So for some of the people who went because they like him as a filmmaker they night change there minds and like him as an artist also.

Media Log Number Twenty Four- Breast Cancer Ad

This is an ad for the Breast Cancer Fund. This ad was rejected by the United States of America because over fears that its depiction of mastectomy scars would prove to be too shocking to the public. I don't think this ad is shocking at all .People need to realize the truth and the truth is that not as many people are doing things about Breast Cancer. People also need to realize that everyone is not perfect. I like how they used the  Victoria Secret slogan to prove a point. Everyone knows the Victoria slogan so everyone can recognize. I think it is good that the Breast Cancer Fund made this ad because hopefully they got a lot of publicity so people will be aware of the situation.

Media Log Number Twenty Three- Issue of Representation

For our media piece we are going to analysis the TV show the Boondocks. The Boondocks was first aired on November 6,2005 and it ended on August 15,2010. It was created by Aaron McGruder. It had 3 seasons.  The Boondocks takes place in the South Side of Chicago, Illinois and it follows the Freeman family. Which is Huey Freeman, Riley Freeman, and Robert “Granddad” Freeman. We are analysis two episodes they are called “The Swine Chicken Flu” and “Guess Hoes Coming For Dinner”.
The plot for “The Swine Chicken Flu” is that KFC came out with a new type of chicken and instead of 12 herbs and spices they now  have 13 herbs and spices and it is the talk of the town. Suddenly there is an epidemic spreads around the town and they do not know what caused it. Huey has been preparing for an epidemic for years and he only prepared for his family and no one else. All the Freeman's friends from there neighborhood ends up going to there house. One of there friends Tom ends up getting the Swine Chicken Flu and everyone has to evacuate from the house. Later on in the episode they realize that the epidemic is from the new chicken.
Some of the stereotypes in this episode are that they think that all African Americans people only eat chicken and that African americans get angry when they do not get there food.
The plot for  “Guess Hoes Coming For Dinner” is that Granddad meets a girl at a grocery store and her name is “Crystal like the Champagne”but she is a “hoe” and granddad is extremely lonely, and Riley and Huey try to tell him but he does not care. Crystal like the Champagne ends up moving into the house with the Freeman family and lives off of grandpas money. All the clues lead up to Crystal like the Champagne of being a hoe but Granddad will not listen. Crystal like the Champagne was becoming a huge problem for the Freeman’s so Riley and Huey got photographs of Crystal like the Champagne but she lied and grandpa believed her because he loved her, so Huey called  A Pimp Named Slickback which is her pimp and he came to get Crystal like the Champagne. Granddad tried to change Crystal like the Champagne’s mind but it did not work and she went back to her pimp.
Some of the stereotypes in this episode are that they think that  African American girls are not treated as fairly as the African American men. It also shows how they portray as African Americans as very violent and vulgar people.
In our opinion The Boondocks reinforces these stereotypes. They do not challenge them at all. The show reminds us of a what the media would call a stereotypical “African American family.” The show talks about relevant issues but we do not think anyone takes them seriously because it is a comedy. If the show had a more serious approach maybe the messages would get across. We also think that the Boondocks focuses more on the negative stereotypes than the positive ones. The show never really talks about anything school related they just focus on the obvious negative stereotypes.
The lesson we learned from our research was that  African Canadians/ African Americans are not represented well in the media. Most TV shows that focus on African Canadians/ African Americans have more than one stereotype in the show. Most of these shows are reinforcing the stereotypes and not challenging them. The only show that challenges the stereotypes is “The Wire”.  It shows good guys who are bad and bad guys who are good. For example Omar Little is a bad guy who is good He is basically Robin Hood. Our form of media creates a better understanding of African Canadians/ African Americans because it shows people that you can not believe everything you see on television and the media does not always portray people like they actually are.

Media Log Number Twenty Two- Crank

Ellen Hopkins is one of my favourite writers of all time. Her books are so real and I like how every page is not filled with words and I like how she makes the words in different shapes and styles.
Crank is about a girl named Kristina Georgia Snow is sent to her fathers house in Albuquerque. She is very far away from her home in Reno. She meets a guy named Adam (Buddy) who introduced her to the Monster which is her drug. When Kristina meets know people she introduced herself as Bree. Bree is her alter-ego. Bree fell in love with Buddy but then Kristina had to go back to Reno. So to keep in touch they wrote letters to each other. But the love between each other did not last. She was addicted to the Monster and she did everything and anything to get some. While she was trying to find the monster she started dating two guys Brendon and Chase. After Chase and Kristina fell in love he had to leave for collage and Brendon raped Kristina and she had a baby.

I like how she ended the book and she continued it in Glass. I love her books and i recommend this book to most teenagers. It is very interesting and kind of addicting cause i always want to know what happens next.

Media Log Number Twenty One- Greenlight 3 By Bow Wow

Greenlight 3 by Bow Wow is the third mixtape in this series and by Bow Wow.  Bow Wow is extremely honest in this mixtape. He proves to everyone that he has nothing to hide and he is not scared to say what he is feeling. Bow Wow is one of my favourite artists because he is real with everyone and he does not try to pretend that he is something he is not. Out of the three mixtapes this one is the best because all the gossip people were talking about he put on the table and he told people the truth. In my opinion Bow Wow has been hated on a lot. Everyone hates on Bow Wow for one reason or the other. I think they should just leave him and let him do his job. He is a regular twenty four year old man just let him live his life. As long as he puts out good music everyone should be fine.

Media Log Number Twenty- Killer Heels by NMA Ad

This ad is for Killer Heels by NMA. This ad was also banned in the United Kingdom because it is trivialised and stylised violence.  I like this ad. I know it is extremely violent but I know of a lot of people who would buy these heels. I also think it is very smart. The heels are called Killer heels for a reason.  This media piece is NMA's version of reality and they wold gain publicity from it. Sometimes I feel like some company's make controversial ads like this on purpose because they want more publicity, So more people can know about there product.

Media Log Number Nineteen- Diesel Ad

This is an ad for Diesel Jeans. It was banned in the United Kingdom because it was a sexual image and was likely to cause serious or widespread offence and was unsuitable in a magazine that could be seen by children. Once again I would never know that it is an ad for Diesel jeans, at first glance i would think it is for the boots. The last thing on my mind is the jeans. This ad most likely got a lot of publicity because it is so sexual and in the media everyone would be talking about it.
This media piece is advertising Diesel jeans. The people that gain form this media piece is Diesel jeans . It would reach a very large audience because it is controversial and it would be in the media a lot.

Media Log Number Eighteen- Usher and Trey Songz Concert

On November 29, 2010 Usher OMG tour came to Air Canada Centre. The OMG is a North American tour that goes to twenty five different  cities. Trey Songz opened for Usher. Originally I went to the concert to go see Trey Songz. I am a big Usher fan and i liked all of his songs but I was a bigger Trey Songz fan. trey Songz performance wasn't as good as i expect it to be but then Usher came out and killed the stage. He performed for two hours straight and he sang his old songs and his new ones.  I did not realize how much I loved Ushers songs until that night. He is an all around entertainer. He does a lot of dancing and he has a lot of costume changes which keeps people entertained. I am glad Usher came to Toronto because not a lot of artists come to Canada that often and I am proud to say that I have seen Usher in Concert.

Media Log Number Seventeen-Tim Burton's Balloon Boy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZ2-NTekgE4&feature=channel

This piece is by Tim Burton. It is 21-foot tall blue balloon with multiple eyes around it.  I like this piece because like Jenny He (Tim Burton's curatorial assistant) said in the video it doesn't matter where you put him. He will not fit in. I could relate to that because you do not always fit in. Anywhere you put him he looks lonely. I think this piece is beautiful. I  love the colours and how unordinary it looks.

Media Log Number Sixteen- Department Of Health Ad

This ad was banned in the United Kingdom because it can be seen as frighten and distress for children.
I think that this ad is very smart because it puts emphasis on the point to stop smoking. I think they should still run this ad. They should not put it in children's magazines because children don't smoke. If children are seeing this ad, some parents should be watching there children better. At first this ad is a little bit frighten but if you continue to read the ad you realize it is not that bad at all. Some people in the world need to less sensitive.

Media Log Number Fifteen- Energizer Batteries Ad

This ad is Energizer Batteries. I would have never noticed that because when I first look at the photograph i see a deadman in a bath tub and I realize that he died because the radio fell in the water and electrocuted him. I did not realize it was Energizer until I read the title.  This ad was banned in Chile because it was rejected by the client.
The type of media is an ad for Energizer Batteries. I know this because it shows Energizer batteries. This differs from other media piece because it is advertising the batteries and it is not like a trailer because a trailer is normally a video and has words and titles. This media piece is advertising Energizer Batteries. The social concerns that are in this media piece are that do not put the radio to close to the bath tub so it does not fall in and you get electrocuted. I do not understand how someone thought of this piece.

Media Log Number Fourteen- The Nightmare Before Christmas

The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my favourite films ever. My other favourite films are Edward Scissor Hands, Corpse Bride and Sweeney Todd. They all have something in common, and that thing is Tim Burton.
The Nightmare before Christmas came out in 1993 and it stars Danny Elfman as Jack Skellinton, Catherine O'Hara as Sally and many more. This was a stop motion film made by Tim Burton.
I can not even count or remember how many times i have seen this movie. I watch it every year at Christmas. It is my own tradition. I also watch it whenever I can. I can not get enough. Most people when they see the Nightmare Before Christmas they think it is very dark and depressing and it is not. It is actually a happy at times and it is not depressing at all.  I think everyone should see this movie at some point in there lifetime.

Media Log Number Thirteen- In My Zone 2 by Chris Brown

This is In My Zone 2 by Chris Brown. This is the third mixtape Chris Brown has come out with this year. The first one was In My Zone and Fan Of A Fan with Tyga. Chris Brown has been working extremely hard on his music this year. The purpose of him making this mixtape is so fans will not get bored of him until his album comes out next year.
Ever since the incident with Rihanna everyone blamed Chris Brown and did not even listen to his side of the story. In my opinion no man should ever hit a woman but Rihanna had to provoke him in some way to make him hit her. I do not think the pictures that got leaked of here were real I think they added make up to them to make the bruises look worse than they actually were. I have stuck with Chris Brown because you should not punish him because of his actions. He is still a very good artist and i support him on that.
He is trying out different types and styles of music to see if his fans like the direction he is going in. I think that when his album comes out it, its going to be huge because he already put out his song Yeah 3X which is doing very well. I am excited to see what Chris Brown is going to come out with next. I also think that what is in the past is in the past and people need to move on and realize what is important and that is the music.

Media Log Number Twelve-Thor Movie Trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOddp-nlNvQ

This is the trailer for the new movie Thor that is scheduled to come out on May 6, 2011 in Real D 3D. This movie is made by Marvel comics. It stars Chris Hemsworth who plays Thor. I am a big fan of cartoons, greek mythology and Marvel comics. This movie looks like it is going to be really good. I like superhero movies. i have never seen a film with Chris Hemsworth so I hope he can play Thor well. I am not happy that every movie that comes out now is in 3D. When you see a movie in 3D it cost more money but I guess it is all part of the experience.

Media Log Number Eleven- Bacardi Ad

This is an ad for Bacardi. It was banned in Canada because it objectified and demeaned women. I think that you would never know it is an ad for Bacardi because it is not advertising Bacardi at all.
This piece presents a version of reality because it is an ad. It is Bacardi's version of reality.  The commercial interests that are inherent in this media piece are that this women is better than beer. Bacardi gains from this media piece because it was banned so they get all the publicity.  Sometime when something get banned it is better than it being in  a magazine and people focus on that instead of what is really wrong with the photography.

Media Log Number Ten- Tim Burton At Bell Light Box

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHkwG0ZBsNQ&feature=player_embedded

This is link is for Tim Burton's exhibition at the Bell Light Box downtown. The picture is a robot who is in the video. This exhibition was first at the MOMA (Museum Of Modern Art). They remade it at the Bell Light Box. I am extremely excited to go see his exhibition over the Christmas holidays. Tim Burton is one of my favourite film makers and artists ever. i have never seen anything by him that I did not love. I like that when you look at Tim Burtons films or piece they are kind of dark, and twisted you really have to think about the message he is trying to portray to his audience.

Media Log Number Nine- Annotated Text

Howell, Peter "Howell: Choosing History over Historians." TheStar.com The Toronto Star 11.Nov.2010. Wed 23 Nov 23 2010 <http://www.thestar.com/printarticle/889539
Peter Howell talks about how "Birth of a Nation" is the most racist films and how it is one of the most important films ever made. If you did not see this movie you would be ignoring a big part of history. they remade the movie wit music by DJ Spooky. DJ Spooky believes that by continuing evil artistically, you can reduce the negative power of it while at the same tie transforming it into something beautiful. He called it the "Rebirth Of A Nation"  a film from the view point of DJ culture.
The information in this article is extremely up to date and the people in this article are experts in the fields they work in.  In my opinion this is a very good article.

Media Log Number Eight- The Dwarves at 50

I find this photograph extremely intriguing because the dwarfs that they created are very accurate. Most people I know of have one of the characteristics of one of the six dwarfs. This photograph would be very nice inside of a card for someones 50th birthday. When you look at you can not help but laugh and when you turn 50 you are half a century, so why not make life as enjoyable as you can.

Media Log Number Seven- Skin Cream Ad

This is an skin cream ad that was banned in the United Kingdom because it was offensive, shocking and likely to cause distress. This is the first time I saw this ad and I am shocked and i can completely understand why it is banned. It is advertising Funeral Home skin cream. This media pieces message is that Beauty is something to die for, and if you don't have this skin cream you will die or look like the woman in this photograph. I find it crazy that people can think of a concept like this and expect it to run in magazine it is extremely offensive and in my opinion less people would buy the cream. On the other hand it is extremely smart becuase this company most likely got a lot of publicity because of this ad and because it is so offensive.

Media Log Number Six- The Retirement Village People

I loved this piece, I thought it was extremely funny. I like how the old people in the piece are dressed up like the village people. A-A-R-P is a life insurance company in the United States .
A lot of people can relate to this piece because they can recognize the sone Y-M-C-A by the Village People and can put the two together and realize that it is the same song but with different lyrics.
I think that this photograph can reach to a very wide audience because adults and adolescents can understand what the piece is trying to say.
Ones understanding would change based on Age because if they are too young they wont know what the song Y-M-C-A is or they will not know what the A-A-R-P is.

Media Log Number Five- Malcolm X

How would viewing this flim affect ones perception of race and racism in America from the 1920’s to the 1960's ?

This is the first time I have seen the whole film of Malcolm X by Spike Lee. The first time I saw it, I only saw part of it because it was such a long film. I thought this was a great film to watch because I knew about Malcolm X before but not in a lot of detail. Before I saw this film I just taught he was an activist who had very powerful speeches. I also thought he was just an all around angry person. After seeing this film I realized he was an activist, but he was a lot of other things also. He was a father of four girls and a husband. He also was part of the Nation of Islam and then converted to Sunni Islam. After this movie I also realized he wasn’t an angry person all the time. He was just very passionate about his speeches. He also had a lot of baggage brought with him from his childhood. His father died when he was young and they also burned his house down by white people. I would have a strong disliking for white people if they did that to me also.
This film is very controversial and in my opinion Malcolm X helped us understand about races a little more. There are multiple examples to show how cruel some people and races can be. For example when the white people burned down Malcolm’s house when he was young because his father was preaching, and telling people about what white people where doing to black people. Another example is when the Nation of Islam burned down Malcolm’s family’s house because they thought he was becoming a huge threat and Malcolm was not listening to everything Elijah Muhammad wanted him to do. I give Malcolm X a lot of respect because he said everything that was on his mind and he was not scared to expose the truth not matter what the cost was even if it was his life. I do not think it was right for some of the brothers from the Nation of Islam to kill Malcolm at his speech. I thought that was very wrong because at one moment they were parsing him, and telling him that he was great and then the next moment they killed him in front of his own family. Malcolm knew he was going to die that day but he still asked his wife and daughters to come and watch him speak. I think he did that because he wanted his family to realize how cruel people can be and he wanted to prove his point to his family and the world.

Media Log Number Four- Transformers Dark Of the Moon Trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qqeoyn58O4

This link is the trailer for the new Transformers Movie. It is Called Transformers Dark Of the Moon. This is the third film in the Transformers series. It is directed by Michael Bay and produced by Steven Spielberg. It comes out on July 1, 2011 in Real D 3D. Transformers Dark Of The Moon stars Shia Lebeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Josh Duhamel and Tyrese Gibson.
I am very excited to see the new Transformers movie because i am a huge fan of the series. I am not to happy about Megan Fox not being in the film but Rosie Huntington-Whitely might be alright.

Media Log Number Three-Friday Night Light Mixtape by J.Cole

The purpose of this mixtape by J.Cole, is so fans can get a taste of what he is working on before his album comes out. I think that mixtapes are an amazing idea for artists because they get people or there fans more familiar with there work, so when there album comes out they already know what to expect.
Friday Night Lights has 20 tracks and some of them feature artists like Drake, Kanye West and Wale. J.Cole has not come out with an album yet but he is working on one. He is on tour right now and he was in Toronto a couple of weeks ago.
I was a J.Cole fan for a long time. I like all the songs on the mixtape. J.Cole has a big fan base because of his mixtapes so when his album comes out i know that it is going to be huge.
The only people that would not like the mixtape are people who are not fans of his music.

Media Log Number Two-Old Spice ad

The type of media is a magazine ad. Some of the conventions of a magazine ad are that it is glossy and there is usually a big picture with a slogan beneath it.
The people from the Old Spice gain from this piece because this magazines ad is put through a number of magazines so everyone sees it . The values that are present are are if you use Old Spice Deodorant or Body Wash you will smell like a man. The values are from people from the Old Spice company. This would cause a consumer to think differently because a wife for example might think her husband does not smell like a man, so she bought him old spice body wash and deodorant.
Peoples understanding of this ad would change based on Income because not everyone can afford Old Spice it might be to expensive.

Media Log Number One-The Universal Sign for "No Refunds"

I find this photo very intriguing because the caption is funny and it suits the photograph very well.
The type of media is a photograph. I know this because it has the conventions of a photograph which are that it is glossy, and it is in a square. The photographer would gain from this piece because he would get recognized for the photo. I think that this photograph can reach a very wide audience because most adults and adolescents understand what the photograph is trying to say.
The values that are present in the photograph is from the photographers point of view. Ones understanding would change based on age because if you are too young you would not understand the gesture that Andy is doing.
